Commercials Celebrating 40 years in Rathcoole

August 07, 2019

40 years ago in 1979 the Sony Walkman was launched, Jack Lynch was Taoiseach, September 1979 the Pope visited Ireland, Kilkenny won the All Ireland Hurling Championship, Kerry won the football Championship and Commercials Hurling Club moved from their base in the Phoenix Park out to Dawson Park in Rathcoole.

From September 1979 Commercials had 50 + juvenile members training every Saturday morning. A lot of work was put into getting a Senior Pitch up and running and it was in the early 80's that the first adult game was held in Commercials grounds. The Secretary's Report from 1980 stated that "patience has paid off as the pitch has turned out to be one of the finest playing surfaces in Leinster".

To celebrate the anniversary of Commercials 40 years in Rathcoole, we are looking for any old photographs (preferably with names) so we can produce a commemorative series of Photos and stories which we hope to publish over the next few months. If you have any old photos, match programmes, newspaper articles or maybe your memories of your time playing, or still playing for Commercials, can you contact us either by PM the Facebook page or emailing commercialshurling@gmail.com or contacting Deirdre on 0863821560. Looking forward to hearing from you.
